Is Eating For Two A Real Thing?

    May 19, 2018

We’ve all heard the phrase, “eating for two? in regards to a pregnant woman’s dietary needs. But what does this actually mean?

How much are you eating now that you are pregnant? The phrase eating for two is correct in the sense that the food you consume not only nourishes you, but also now nourishes your developing child. However another common interpretation of this phrase is that you eat twice as much food! Which when you think about it, is a pretty ridiculous notion. You don’t have a fully grown adult in your belly, why would eat enough food to sustain one? So how much do you actually need to eat? This is something that many women struggle with, getting enough food to meet their needs and the needs of their growing child. As you can imagine needs change as your baby gets bigger. As your belly grows so does the amount of food you should be consuming. Luckily Nutrimedy's nuExpecting program can connect you to a Registered dietitian to help you gain the right amount of weight while pregnant. Check it out!

It is a common misconception that pregnant women need to eat much more than they normally do for a healthy pregnancy. Contrarily, calorie needs do increase but incrementally and never to a point where you are doubling your intake. So the next time you hear someone say you are eating for two, you will know better.
